Board of Trustees
PERA is governed by its Board of Trustees. The Board approves PERA’s operating budget, decides legislative policy and priorities, and hires the executive director. In addition, the Trustees establish the policies and procedures that govern operations at PERA, hear and rule on appeal matters of disabilitants, retirees, and members, and direct the dissemination of information to PERA’s members.
Board Trustees do not receive compensation for their service to PERA, but are reimbursed for necessary expenses incurred while serving the association.
The PERA Board of Trustees consists of eleven members. The State Auditor is a member of the Board by statute. Five trustees are appointed by the Governor to represent cities, counties, school boards, retirees and the public, respectively. The remaining five members are elected by the PERA membership at large to represent the general active membership, Police and Fire plan members and all benefit recipients. All elected and appointed Board members serve four-year terms. The State Attorney General’s office provides legal counsel to the Association.

Board of Trustees Election Process
In January 2019, five PERA members will be elected to serve on the Board for four-year terms. Three of the seats will be filled by active (presently working) members of the Association’s three largest defined benefit plans. The fourth seat is specifically designated to be occupied by an active member of the Police & Fire Plan. The fifth seat is designated to be filled by a former member of PERA who is either receiving a retirement annuity or disability benefit.
All five trustees will be elected at large by the retirees, benefit recipients, and active members of PERA’s General, Police & Fire Plans, and Correctional Plans. Defined Contribution Plan participants who do not also belong to the one of the Association’s defined benefit plans cannot vote.

Open Appointment Process
The Governor appoints five trustees to represent Minnesota cities, counties, school boards, retired annuitants, and the general public. The Trustees appointed to these positions also serve a four-year term.

REGULAR MEETING SCHEDULE
BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Trustee of the Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) that the following dates will be scheduled for Regular Board Meetings and Planning Workshop for the year 2018. The Board will meet the second Thursday of the following months beginning at 9:30 a.m. in Room 117 of the State Retirement Systems of Minnesota Building, 60 Empire Drive, St. Paul, Minnesota, unless otherwise noted.
